tires or shocks and springs first?

Hi guys,first time on maxbimmer and could use some advice. Just bought my first bmw an 88 325i convertible and cant wait to put my own touches on it. My question is when i got it home from T.O. and got it saftied the mechanic told me the shocks and springs were not long for this world. I want to put new rims and tires on it and was wondering if i should get them first to see the room thats left so can lower it accordinglyor just have the work done, worried i will end up with to much wheel well showing, thanks. p.s. love this sight, have already learned a ton.
