What you really need is someone to fill out the green ministry appraisal form.
http://www.rev.gov.on.ca/en/forms/rst/pdf/1159.pdf

- Go get yourself a temporary 10day plate (need valid insurance).

- Fill out that green form, and take it to a BMW dealer with your car.
(Most sales managers will sign what ever value you want them to. It must be a sales manager though - sales guys don't count).

- return to ministry with appraisal form, insurance and safety, and you're good.

So far, I've never had anyone charge me for it.

It is unfortunate that want an appraisal just so they can make sure they get their cut of the tax, that is the ownly reason they are asking for it. You will probably pay as much for the appraisal at those well known places as they want in tax. I hope you find someone who will charge $30 to say your 25 year old car is worth $500

For a temporary vehicle permit (not regular),
you need the signed original fit vehicle permit from PO.
you need the used vehicle package
you need insurance.
your license

They will put the car in your name, give you new plates with a "T" sticker, and you've got 10 days of driving to sort out everything else.

..... i've done it a couple of times.. even for parts cars I was driving to their final resting place.

..... East end of Toronto is the worst for the Ministry. A lot of people don't know what they are doing in there. I had to go to another ministry once to get it done right...

Then to get your regular sticker.. and be valid...

you need to get a safety
and you need the appraisal form filled and signed.
plus valid insurance.

it's always good to have the bill of sale, and appraisal amount to be close.
most often, the 85 BMW would have $0.00 value on the used vehicle package.

Wrong, not if the car is over 25 years old. You can not register the car, if over 25 years old, or get a regular temp permit/plate untill a MTO approved apprasial is completed. The last time I purchased a old Corvette MTO offered me a "special permit" but the car had to remain in the sellers name untill the appraisal was done. The special permit is normally for driving cars just purchased out of provence, I was told they made an exception for me.

I've always had it done for free at a dealership.
ask nicely... some don't even care to see the car if they have enough details about it.

right.. but I've actually been given a plate without the appraisal (for a 20+ year old car)... otherwise they give you the special permit to stick on the front window like old days....

specials permits are still given all the time... where the current rule prevent you from getting a plate. Out of province is one of them.

Either way... you can drive the car for 10 days on a Special Permit, or Temporary Plate... sort out the paperwork and off you go.

You don't need that kind of appraisal. That service is for classics or agreed value, where they take pictures, and document the car in a report. Mostly, it is for insurance purposes.

what you need is the simple PDF form filled out and signed by a manager in the auto industry. Most of them will ask what value you want me to put... that's it.
