Price Point For a E38

Hey Everyone,

I am looking to get into a E38 however, I have absolutely no knowledge of them.

What is a good price to pay for a decent E38? I have seen a couple around I just want to make sure I am not getting ripped off.

My very brief research has given me these stats.

1995 - 1999 - 740il - Low $4,000 - High $10,000 +

1999 - 2001 - 740il - Low $7,000 - High $13,000 +

Are these prices in line with what you guys have paid for yours? Anyone selling there E38 for a good price??

@rb26dett s13 - good you're doing your research - yes prices can be tricky and sellers no all the right tactics.

I researched and hunted this car down for over a yr! good thing I was in no hurry to buy!

what I found:

1995 - 1999 - 740il - Low $4,000 - High $7,000 +

1999 - 2001 - 740il - Low $7,000 - High $13,000 + (totally agree)

(dont forget to keep aside almost half the price of the car to pay for any surprising repairs that may pop-up!)

my advice to you - take your time, get the car checked. Drive her, see that all the gadgets are working and then make ur decision.

Also - the newer the year the less stuff that maybe wrong with it. I wanted to buy a 2000 or so but my budget didnt permit. I ended up buying a really sweet e38 - 98 740i - just what I wanted and in very good shape. bought it in 1st week July and trouble free till now - touch wood

Best of luck - I'm really not that experienced to be giving advice - just thought id share my e38 buying experience with you.

I've noticed myself that the prices of BMWs jump around a lot. Say 3 month from now, you could buy an e38 about 20% cheaper from what the running price is right now.

It also depends what model you want too. If you want a "true sport" 740, then the price will be significantly more.

I am in absolutely no rush to pick up an E38. I am trying to get the facts prior to picking one up. So if the price fluctuates down between now and then I am OK with that.

What is the difference between the 740i and the "true sport" version referred too.

Any notorious dealers or people on the boards with "shady" E38's??

Main differences are sport version has different seats, shadowline trim, 3.15 dff and a slightly better stance due to stiffer suspension.

Main things to look for when buying an E38---

1 Engine: hear her...see if there is any ticking noises. It should be quiet and no vibrations whatsoever. Check all hoses for leaks especially ppower steering hoses. Check all pulleys for vibrations and noises. Check fan blade by moving it around when engine is off. Also check Rad and surrounding area for dried coolant residue. According to mileage, above 140K water pump, belts and thermostat, valve cover gaskets should be replaced.

2. Body, check for rust on the bottom lining of the doors. Notorious for it. Ofcourse any other dings and dangs

3. Suspension, Check steering for play. Healthy E38 should not have any steering play. Check all the control arms with a crow bar from underneath. they are xpensive pieces.

4. Drive and see how the eingine roars..should be acrisp and see how well it shifts. There should not be more than 1 second gap when going from N to ither D or R.

Good luck.

99-E38 (never for sale )
