how much to fix? guesstimate

i have an m20 with low compression on cylinder #5, i was wondering what this may be caused by and what parts i may need to fix, trying to guess a cost here. i may swap it into my 84 318i if it doesnt seem like a lost cause. heres the results of test
300,000 km 89 325i

cyl 6 165
cyl 5 120
cyl 4 158
cyl 3 169
cyl 2 158
cyl 1 165

did a wet compression test on cyl # 5 and it went up to 135

I am hoping i can just repair cyl 5 and be done with it without too much trouble.

can't just do one cylinder, gotta do all while you're at it. Your rings done most likely. Motor rebuild is more costly than buying another motor with good compression on all 6.

rings

how much for parts for ring job? i will replace what is needed but i dont want to do a full rebuild, just a refresh maybe. the engine sounded great while i had it running, very quiet, pulled well. i would get a better m20 but it would have to be cheap, which i dont think will happen. at least if i do the work on the m20 i have, i can buy parts at my own pace over time.

If it ran well, just run it like this! NO point in wasting time and $$$ on it. If you have to fix it, wont be that cheap if done right, because you cant (or shouldnt) do just one thing...and at the end, done right, it will add up $$$.

swap

so do the swap, when if and when it dies replace? how long can a engine go with a bad cylinder? i would be putting this in place of an m10 in my 318i, just want to make sure that the swap of everything from the m20 is worth it.

so if it was you

would you scrap the m10 and put the m20 in even with its fault? I dont know why but the lowly m10 appeals to me at some primitive level, i guess its something i may need to get over. if i swap i gain 5 speed, more powerful engine. I would turbo m10 but too much money. If i do put m20 in i will need to get rid of 2 m10 engines, and a dinan cast turbo manifold, i can keep the ihi turbos and intercooler i assume to maybe use on the m20. Does anyone ever see the m10 being worth more then its weight in scrap?

m20

i know its out there somewhere, but i am only concerned about ecu and cluster (electrical stuff) with the swap, 1-10 how hard will that be?

It's low, but it's still has decent compression. I would be worried if it was under 100. Was this test hot, cold?

Do a leakdown test also, it could be a valve, which wouldn't be as bad.

test

it was a while ago, i think the engine was cold. didnt do a leakdown, did normal and wet . i just want to make sure i dont swap it in and then it dies. i am just not familiar with the symptoms of a cyl with low compression, never really had it before or at least didnt know i did.

weight

so all in all whats better, a light 318i with moderate hp or a heavier 325i with more horsepower. how much hp would a lighter 84 318i need to keep up with an m20 in a straight line, also in the twisties?

As others mentioned, you should not just replace the parts in that bad cylinder. You may need a valve job also. A better option may be to buy the s50 that STATIC is selling, it will require a different engine harness also but you'll have some real power after that swap.

i wish

i so wish i could buy something with more power, but not happening. I am stuck with an auto 84 318i and a 325i with low compression. I would trade the 325i for a 5 speed swap, but i dont think thats going to happen either lol. No money and 2 cars neither of which is very good. Bad decisions on my part.

Why not part one car out, buy a 5spd m20 E30. Swap it into the good and part out the other one again? Just a suggestion.

Pff, I have no money and 3 bad cars. I guess this means I have graduated from "new 2 bmw" to "bmw 4 life whether I want it or not"? Haha
