Your baseband is not your OS version. Baseband is the OS for the modem/GSM phone (Not the native iOS that runs the phone.) You want to keep this as old as possible. When you upgrade using an apple released IPSW it upgrades the baseband. This can prevent future jailbreaks/unlocks.

Sorry if I wasnt clear there. I downgraded my OS because when you downgrade the OS it downgrades the broadband also. From there I went into pwnage tool and it made me a custom broadband number while upgrading the OS alone. So back on 4.0 with broadband not upgraded

downgrading the OS does not downgrade the baseband.

what program allows you to downgrade any 05.XX.XX baseband?

(i'm curious, if so i'll downgrade my friends' phone)

I don't believe you have to worry about the baseband with the current builds.
A co-worker got his 3GS warrantied last week and his new replacement came with iOS4 and new bootrom, he therefore couldn't use the older pwnage iOS4 jailbreak.
On Saturday I told him about this jailbreakme.com and he jailbroke his new 3GS that came with iOS4, and then was able to unlock with ultrasn0w.

Ultrasn0w was alway able to unlock all recent basebands.......but there wasn't a jailbreak for the newer 3GSs with the new bootrom.

although the new ultrasn0w unlocks all basebands, I agree with propr'one, it's always safer to maintain your baseband. i'm still rockin version 4.26 on iOS 4.0.

for those who want a pwnage tool jailbreak but don't have a mac, you can use ih8snow:

some of the main reasons i jailbreak:
SBSettings: most important app, gives you quick access to all your toggles by swiping the status bar, (you can turn on/of wifi, bluetooth, 3g, push, my3g, control brightness)
3G unrestrictor: to use apps that are restricted to wifi on 3G
install0us (even though i purchase all the good quality apps, at $.99-2.99 a pop its not a big deal
mywi: makes your iphone a wifi hotspot
