power loss 330ci

I have a 2001 330ci. After about 2 months of having it i noticed that sometimes the car is not as powerful as other times. It lags under 3 rpm and bursts with noise and acceleration around 4k. but then other times its powerful right from 1.5 rpm. I know this is a symptom of vanos seals but until this day sometimes its perfectly fine and feels great(especially on a cool night) , and sometimes it just feels sluggish and slow. its very annoying having an inconsistent car and some insight would be great. my car has 170k on it (km not m)

if the vanos seals are truly gone, then should the car feel slow all the time? has anyone else who had their vanos seals replaced, experienced the car feeling fine sometimes and then sluggish other times? i just dont wanna do the job and then see that it wasnt the problem.

From what I've read the seals will go on all cars after 20-40 thousand kilometers. You're better off to do it either way and I guarantee you will notice it! I did mine 2 months ago and it was very noticeable.

I don't know what's causing it to be intermittent but if it's not smooth you may want to get a new set of NGK spark plugs. I was using Bosch and they were misfiring so as soon as I put in the NGKs it went away.

From what I've read online bad Cam Position sensors can cause performance losses but I don't know how to diagnose that so you should look it up on e46fanatics.

I have the exact same problem, sometimes my car is strong and pulls good and other times nothing happens until i get to like 4k rpm. mine is a 02 with 145KM on it and i haven't done the vanos job yet. but my spark plugs where changed at 115K, do i need to change them again?

I'm wondering if I spray some MAF cleaner or within the intake to clear up any varnish perhaps?

I had random power loss, ended up replacing the MAF and solved all my problems.

i tried cleaning my MAF with sensor cleaner and it felt better after. but then the problem came back the next day. it was just a fluke.once when the car was being slow, i tried unplugging my MAF and driving around and it felt better. then i plugged it back in again and the car was still ok. once again just a fluke. i dont think its my MAF. can a bad o2 sensor give these symptoms?

bimmersport quoted $320 for the just the labour for replacing vanos seals. plus besians parts are like 65 which is very good. but that labour charge is ridiculous. does anyone know a place that can do it for cheaper?

I just did my vcg & vanos seals two days ago @ 123700kms. Following these two diy, it was step-by-step. With a few breaks it was an all day affair. Also found that my water pump was leaking in the process, but I had the fan off so it was a good time for it to happen.

http://www.beisansystems.com/procedu..._procedure.htm

btw - shops will quote four hours labour, so $320 is reasonable. The valve cover gasket should be replaced @ the same time as well as a few other gaskets. The above links have the full list of parts.

When it happens more then once, maybe its not a fluke! Did you ever try to scan the car? I should give you some CEL at one point!

So that Beisan Systems guy wants $60 for a few teflon O-rings? Sounds a little like gouging to me!
