a/c retrofit or replace?

my ac is gone, no belt, po said need new compressor. havent checked it but i know its r 12 and its a pricey fix, assuming i can even find an r12 compressor. that said a few ppl have told me that they think the compressors are the same so i was thinking about swapping in an r134a compressor and going that route.after talking to parts at bmw, i was told to grab a retrofit kit to do so, then was going to grab a compressor off one of the vendors here.
anyone done this? any input? any thign to watchout for or just in general can anybody tell me anything about this, i cant seem to find much info online

i have R12 too, i heard that it was a must to convert to the new system, as in dealer supposed to do it at their cost no matter how old the car is.
