Thumbs up This weekend: Out with the old, in the with New! Turbo content, lots of pics

This weekend my buddy and I decided to build up the 2.7L stroker, clean it all up install some new parts and stuff it in his unassuming E30.

Old setup:

2.5L M20, stock top/bottom end, welded water jackets in the head and Race Ware headstuds. Garret turbo.

400WHP (DynoJet @ Magnus Motorsports) @ ~21psi on 94 pump

New setup:

2.7L SETA, stock bottom end 2.5L (887 head) with stock valvetrain, Cometic MLS stock thickness HG, Race Ware headstuds, AEM Progressive Methanol injection running 100% methanol, Precision 6262 T4 turbo, 6 speed MZ4 transmission.

All painted up with authentic John Deere Green/Yellow paint

Engine management: VEMS V3.3, 630cc Siemens injectors, Walbro pump, Electromotive 6cyl DFU coilpacks.

Started on Friday @ 7:30pm:

By 10:30pm we called it a day and it looked like this:

Nice and early on a Saturday around 3pm we got to work assembling the motor and head:

Together, valve lash adjusted and timed:

Manifold, Turbo, WG all on:

Intake on, motor is complete:

Here you can see the stock 6 speed clutch, holds just fine:

And by 1:00 am, the motor was back in the car, tranny in and fired her up to bleed the cooling system and I did a quick retune just to be able to drive around the block properly. We called it a night @ 1:30 am.

Today we cleaned up the shop, filled her up with some Sunoco 94 and I street tuned the car for ~17psi with the new setup. Nothing crazy, motor runs good no blow by or anything and pulls much harder then before even with pretty weak ignition timing for now.

Gonna get it on the dyno soon and try to pull as much as we can out of it and keep the stock motor together (hoping for at least 450whp) and probably bring it out for Eurofest/Canadian Outlaw Shootout for some fun.

Looks very good! How many km does this motor have it? i ask because i have been thinking about doing a setup on my m20, but not sure what i should do to the motor to make it a good candidate to boost.

don't really know.... the head was recently rebuilt I believe, we just had it decked for mating with the MLS gasket. The block was original to the car, but we put a new set of (used) pistons and rods in it. Crank is original to the block.

To be honest though you have nothing to worry about if you motor is healthy right now. These M20's are stupid tough motors. Depending on how much boost you want to run will dictate what you need to do. If you're planning on low boost like 8-10psi... don't even open the motor IMO.

Notorious VR, any chance you know a dude with a minttt e24 shark named Alex? He tells me he has some big plans and you'll be dialing it in for him

Good luck to you! Dropping in a built motor?

Hmmm, I don't believe an Alex with an E24 rings any bells...

Looks sweet! I want to go for a ride in this car

You guys not using that cam sensor port? Or was that with some previous system you used? I need to make myself one of these in the next few weeks. Curious to know what you did for a pin on the cam gear.

hehe... It's quite the handful!

Currently no, we're not. When we made that cover there was a slight mis measurement and the Hall sensor was ever so slightly hitting the magnet. Either way once of these days I'll get unlazy and hook up the Hall sensor and go from semi-sequential to full sequential

The cam gear is OEM untouched. We just added a cam magnet from a VR6 with a shim to space it out to sit all flush with the cam.

Welp, went to the dyno today...

First pull off the street from just a short street tune gave us 400/400 to the wheels @ 17psi.

Did some fueling and timing corrections and then turned up the boost to ~23psi and got this:

(there is a slight error in the boost reading on the dyno so the above what I posted is actual from the ECU)

We stopped there and called it a night.

W00t! excellent numbers! If you really want to try and get that extra 50whp (personally I don't like it) Maybe you can run some water/meth injection to dial in a bit more timing.

What fuel were you running? 94? 91?

Either way, srs numbers!

Why did you put a John Deer motor in your car?
