Head gasket on the long weekend?

was planning on doing some engine work on my 325i this long weekend.
went to go get a head gasket but no part places have it in stock.
should have seen that coming.
well does any one have a spare kicking around that i could pick up?

with the exception of a few shops, you're only going to find parts at the dealer or online. The dealer isn't always going to stock parts for your car either so you might be stuck with online. autopartsway.ca usually gets my parts to me the next day, and I don't ask for any special shipping. they only ship on weekdays though so you might be out of luck unless someone has a spare. You'll also need head bolts

orr i wouldnt know, but is it possible to remove the cam with the head on?
but then you would have all the rad and ran and stuff in your way?
anyone know if this is possible?

Yes you can do it. Rad stuff and all that has to be removed as it slips through the rad support. That is the only way besides removing the head.

hmm really eh.
i think ill give it a go tonight.
could you tell me what all has to be removed?
will the rad support stay atleast?
or just the rad, the other one infront of that, and the fan and grills?

why do you want to do the headgasket or remove the cam?
Its a huge job if you've never done it on an e30 before. And taking the cam out with the head still in the car is the harder way to do it. Much better to take the head off, get it tanked, remove carbon buildup, maybe get it shaved. Then you can do all seals and gaskets.
If your HG is fine, don't bother with it. If its leaking, maybe contact a member that can coach you through it for a few beers and food. It really is a big job.
Whats the reasoning to remove the cam? is it ****ed? want to put in a bigger one?
If its fine, do the eccentrics on the rockers and leave the cam alone. Cam and headgasket are not regular maintenance items.
If you are just wanting to spruce everything up, do the oil seals and timing belt, waterpump, flush your coolant system, etc. But make sure to label your hoses and wires, it will be a headache later if you get some mixed up.

im doing the cam because i have a newer Schrick cam i want to install.
and when you remove the head, you have to get a new gasket and new studs.
so thats why i wanted to know if i could aviod removing the head and still replace the cam.
But i found a really good price on a new gasket set and head studs so ill order that asap. then when it comes in ill do it right.

good plan. What gasket did you go for? I've had bad luck with Victor Reinz but some people have made out ok.
Do you have a Bentley? or a least did you get the PDF? Are you doing anything else with the cam? Chip, cone, injectors, etc?

yeah its a Victor Reinz set. should i go for something else?
i have another M20 head in my garage that i took all apart with the cam out then put it all back together lol, just to practice for the real thing. so i have a pretty good idea of what im doing.
i did get the injectors and still waiting on a chip.

is the head on the car an i head(885)? I'm guessing you have an e engine(2.7l), if your spare head is an 885 from an i, then why not consider the swap(theres more to it than just switching them though), then you could have the cam installed and ready to go in on a clean flat head when your parts arrive. and you have a stroked i.

the car currently has the I engine.
the one i have extra and took apart in the E.
i was going to swap the E block wit the I head in my car but decided against it.

the VR head gaskets have been known to be problematic. Search e30tech for Victor Reinz head gasket and you'll see some discussion about it.

I've had better luck with Goetze. In the thread on e30tech peerless compares 3 different gaskets and the difference in quality is pretty obvious. I've compared the Goetze and VR ones personally.
if you can find a Goetze one or get an OEM through the dealer that might be a better idea.

Before you take everything apart take a good look at your hoses to see if any of them will need replacing. You'll be removing all of the intake and the entire cooling system(save the heater core). Its not necessary to remove the rad support or the A/C condenser when doing the head though. I usually work through it this way:
airbox/AFM/boot > Rad, hoses, fan > ign wires, cap, belt covers, belts > throttle body, vacuum lines, fuel lines > exhaust(mani to pipe) > heabolts, and some heavy lifting and its out.
You can make it a little easier to lift by pulling off the intake manifold and exhaust manifolds, but with my big arms and fingers I find it easier to remove them on the bench.
