HELP :( Sudden oil leak from Oil Pump?
I have no idea what happened, I noticed this oil leak. Bad, Bad 1 drop a second when the engine is running. It comes directly from the oil pump. What are my options? Replace the oil pump $$$ or can that thing be tightened/replaced the seal?
All input will be appreciated, Thanks all.

that's not the oil pump.. that's just the adapter for the filter/cooler.
That looks like the other side of the thermostat for the cooler.

Ah ok, but any harm if I try to unscrew that thing and try to RTV silicone it. From more reading (still very few info on this) is that it is an oil pressure valve?

I'm not sure what it is, but RTVing it probably won't hold, as oil pressure can reach 80+ psi...
you best bet is to go to realoem.com and see the exploded view, if there is a seal you should try to replace it with a new one.

+1....
Just get the o-rings you need. There's a kit for the pressure relief valve in there.
Can you tell if it's leaking from where the adaptor mounts to the block? Or from where the filter and the adaptor join? Or from the pressure relief valve inside the adaptor? Worst case, it's not a big deal to replace them all - o-rings are cheap.

Thats what I plan to do next, change O ring, But I wonder WHY? The car did not leak about 4 weeks ago. It was standing still for about 4 weeks while I was changing the timing belt. (yeah I'm newbie takes me that long to change timing belt ) My theory is that "Engine Restorer" stuff which I put in might have hardened and clogged the oil filter...? and now there is too much pressure and the old valve leaks.
cirrusblau: The oil drops excatly from where I circled in the picture, from pressure relief valve.
Thanks

Do you really have to ask why? Your car is from 1989.

The site that you got that picture from says right at the beginning

The valve used a faulty O-ring material and was later replaced in 11/90 with a better quality material called Viton, outlined in BMW Service Information bulletin 11 09 90 (3137).
|
You can try replacing the o-ring or buy an oil relief valve kit off from autopartsway.ca for like $12.

It's just an o-ring, take the circlip out and get that plug out. Goto a parts store and get a o-ring the same size as the old one. I did the same thing with my M50.
