Anyone looked at this car?

Hey guys, i am going to check out a car in Barrie on the weekend. Just wondering if anyone has looked at it already. It's a Malaga '76 and it's on the Toronto Kijiji (classic cars- BMW). Lots of views but still available. Would appreciate any info, thanks.

Watch out for rust, '76 02's are notorious for rust. Bring the following

light
small magnet
pencil or pen
jackstands and jack


Look everywhere including

-rear shock towers, both through the trunk and under the rear wells
-subframe attachment point to the rockers
-spare tire well(expect a bit of rust here)
-rockers
-frame rails, especially the driver's side near the clutch master and under the main cabin directly under where the front seats are
-lower nose panel
-check under the front wheel wells, look up where the fenders attach and use a pencil to poke around
-pedal box (pull the driver's side carpet up front)
-floors (front and rear) - pull the rear seat bottoms and look for rust, especially where the bolts are for the subframe mounts
-doors (look on the bottom)

Use your fridge magnet to spy out bad bondo

any bad rust in these areas must be factored into your price

Thanks for the info Kris. Why are '76s more prone to rust? I know there is some bondo in one of the doors for sure, hopefully nowhere else. Sorry about the size, still trying to figure out how to resize images.

Not sure why, but that's why the pundits have told me about the '76's on the FAQ board. Plus I owned one which rusted to dust.

That's some badass bondo, check every panel thoroughly.

Ok guys, checked the car out and found;
The lower front panel rotted through.
The bondo on the door (rest of car is bondo free).
One of the rear shock towers has been repaired, the other is just showing some rust.
Some rust in spare tyre well, but doesn't go through.
One of the drivers seat mounting points has rusted through.
One of the gas pedal pivot ball thingys has rusted off but the rest of the floors and frame rails seem ok.
Paint blister and some heavy scratches on small area of roof.
Small area of rust on the rear wheel arch.
Rest of the car looks good with decent paint.
Started right up from cold and idled well (new Webber carb)
Drove good with no shifting probs.
Lights and gauges work fine.
Seems to be a lot of oily residue under the car (front to back). Could be rust protection i guess.
There is also more residue in the engine bay.
Looks like the oil pan is leaking (couple of drops on the floor while i was there).
I work in a machine shop so have access to welding gear etc. so i could do some of the repairs myself. I like the car but i also want to be realistic so i guess i am looking for some input to help me decide. Sorry for the lengthy description but it's a big decision for me. I would appreciate your input, thanks

that pic of the wheel arch is a hole, its more than just a little rust starting.

Pass, especially with the shock tower rust and the nose plus the floor etc etc etc. That car will drain you and is not worth the money at all.

You will find a better one, just keep looking. Think about going to the US for a car.

Are you willing to drive out to Port Perry? I know of a 2002 in much better shape that is available for not much more money than the one you looked at. If you are interested, send me a PM and I can give you specs of the car, and the address.
