Two wires must go into the sensor, the photo resistor/sensor is just a switch that tells it when it's dark, which then either tells the computer to trip a relay or trips a relay directly.
Light = disconnected (lights off), dark = connected (lights on).
Ever try just jumping the leads going to the sensor? (if the sensor is easily accessible) I'd check the whole system out in a schematic before doing anything with it.
This is on thing I never have to even think about, so all this is off the top of my head. LOL
