Yup; my 323ci was Sept 1999 build date; couldn't be programmed off and there was no dedicated fuse for DRL's.

BMW makes it VERY difficult to disable DRL's on the early cars... It's so damn stupid. They hardwire that crap into the harness of the car.

When I disabled Stephanies E36 vert I had to make and break all kinds of connections under the fuse/relay box after studying the schematics for an hour.

Same thing for the E34's AFAIK... I hate BMW for that crap.

Two wires must go into the sensor, the photo resistor/sensor is just a switch that tells it when it's dark, which then either tells the computer to trip a relay or trips a relay directly.

Light = disconnected (lights off), dark = connected (lights on).

Ever try just jumping the leads going to the sensor? (if the sensor is easily accessible) I'd check the whole system out in a schematic before doing anything with it.

This is on thing I never have to even think about, so all this is off the top of my head. LOL

As post # 2 says, see Rocco @ RMP. He deleted mine for $40 last year.

A friend of mine imported a maxima from the US & had to wire up the DRL to plate it in Ontario. They are technically supposed to go off when the parking brake is applied as well.

EstorilM3: Are you saying that once you have it plated, you can not get fined for not having them?

I have CCFL Angel Eye's - I didn't want the bright look of LED's. I've been a little concerned that they are not technically bright enough to qualify as DRL's, but I have never be stopped for having them. Even when I got that {ehem} small speeding ticket a couple months ago, the cop did not mention them.

LOL - right now I have to say no. It depends on when you are really planning to do it.

I currently have a honeydo list of outdoor things including a retaining wall in the backyard. Even the second go with this DIY I think it would still take a 3-4 hours to make it clean. That wouldn't go over too well without the wall being up first.

What year is your car? Is it the facelift'd e46 like mine?

Ghetto method; drove around for a while w/o bulbs installed and warning lights on dash (really poor judgment). One day the cluster started flickering and I put everything back to stock. Cluster is still okay (knocking on 400k) but you wouldn't recognize the car if it were parked in your driveway; mods all gone; rolling on 15" bottlecaps.
