Only 16 pounds difference between the two motors and the M30 has +18hp and +55Nm tq. The extra power can easily accelerate the extra weight and then some.

That being said, as much as I love the old big 6's, I'd probably still go M50 because M30's are starting to become more sparse.
Put on m50 fly wheel from M20B20 or B23 and you get more torque
And fuel economy M50 have about 10L/100km but M30 ~17L/100km for the same power
P.S. that weight you found is without gearbox????

Why would you use an M50 when you can buy an M52 for 500 bucks. Add S52 cams and you have 240 hp.

I'm curious, why even bother swapping the engine if you're on such a limited budget? I would recommend either doing other maintenance to the E30 because most need it (unless you bought one that is already refreshed), or two keep saving and do a proper swap.

Unless you're willing to swap in junk yard parts that leak everywhere, missing random things an M or S 50/52 swap cannot be done in full for $1500. Not properly anyways, and not unless you get most parts for free or dirt cheap in which case good luck.

He said 1500 for the price of the engine. That won't get him an S52 but a solid M52 with all the OBDI bits he needs and the right chip, definitely.

Would be nice to just get an engine that you work on, on the side type deal. Get all the internals and everything done so once you think it's fully ready, you can just drop it in during a weekend and get everything all hooked up and ready to play for the week. That's what my plan is for later on this summer. Get an engine for over winter and just slap a turbo on the girl and get it ready for next summer ^_^

Impossible. No other engine besides the M20 fits..

Only an SR20DET will fit, but it's too much of an amazing engineering feat to put into a piece of shit E30.

Only if you spend TONS of time looking for the right deals (whenever they are dirt cheap) and that takes a lot of work! (unless you have nothing better to do! If you put a $$$ amount to the time you wasted hunting parts, you would still end up with a much bigger #. Lets just say you want to buy all this tomorrow, ALL at once, $2500 might not be enaugh...
