Nevermind downforce and suspension, what about GEARING??? HAHA, The stock 3.08 gears will top out around 250km/h in 5th gear... that record car I was talking about had a 6 speed transmission.
Mustang 5.0 5-speeds did not come with 3.08 gears. They were 2.73's.
And a 6-speed tranny has no bearing whatsoever on top speed. Surprised to hear that one from you, Randy.

Yeah, once the air gets under the car at those speeds you gotta get the downforce going to keep it planted, otherwise, it goes into "kite" mode.
Wrong. Downforce never hurts, but "kite mode" is BS.

Once again, the local BMW board is chock full of Mustang "experts".

Even with a 2.73 rear end, max in fourth gear (1:1 ratio in the 1990 Mustang) is 161 MPH.

The 5th gear is 0.68 to 1, which is pretty heavily over-driven to allow for an additional 40 MPH of top end. A six speed would help, provided you're running a custom gear-set to keep from being massively over-driven in 5th or 6th gear.

Oh, and you should know that downforce DOES hurt....hurts top end a whole bunch. Downforce = drag, and the stock Mustang (much like all stock BMWs) actually produces LIFT at high speed, and not any downforce. To keep that car stable above 150 MPH is pretty tough, and the more downforce the system produces, the more HP required to push the car past the aerodynamic barrier.

Mustang or BMW, vehicle dynamics remain the same, and the basic laws of physics are the same. I'd call the same BS if somebody said they had their BMW up to 197.7 MPH.

Like most auto racing fans, I understand that downforce= drag.

When I said it doesn't hurt I was referring to stability and handling at high speeds. What hurts straight-line speed can be good for high speed feel, handling, and stability.

Unlike 99% of the people here, I have driven a Mustang at high speeds (approx. 160mph), and it is not as scary and uncontrollable as all of the armchair quarterbacks here make it out to be.

I do agree that 197MPH is a little far-fetched.

Like I said, I don't disagree with the possibility of 180 MPH, as I think that's readily achievable with 500 or so HP.

Those next 20 MPH are pretty tough to push through though.

And yes, your car never felt as though it had any stability problems at 140+ MPH. Then again, your car was not a stock suspension'd car either.....

All right guys bs is over, today we went trough all the mods and the stuff that we did to the car, and a little secret test drive that we managed to do. It proved that the car hit 182-184 that's why the cop picked me up at 180. that's the speed I was actually doing. I'll post some pics whenever I get a chance. We're still wondering why the gps thing showed 197 though. It's pretty wierd. I would have loved it if it actually did 197 though. But there you have it the car hit no more than 185. Cool huh.

A GPS can be off because it's only good at measuring average speed over a *relatively* long distance (say, 1 KM or so). Otherwise, a GPS is only good to about 10 metres or so, at any point in time.

All the GPS does is record your position (to within 10 metres) one instant, and then record your position (to within 10 metres) the next instant. It then takes the time difference between the two recorded positions, and calculates the speed from one point to the next.

Over a 1km or so, a GPS is fairly accurate in terms of speed. But for a short distance, they can range quite a bit. I used to get some funny readings off the speedo on my boat, as it was GPS based (as opposed to the water pickup tube that is the more standard issue on a boat).

I highly DOUBT that this stang had its STOCK gear ratios!!
lets keep that in mind!!
also, i do not at all agree with the fact that stangs are unstable at high speeds, i mean i'm sure they are with a STOCK setup, but if you get the right sprrings, shocks, sways, etc. you can make even a PICK UP handle amazing at high speeds, RIGHT?!
