Which oil are you running?

I've only had my E90 like a month. Bought it with 100KM. Up to 80KM was Maranello serviced, but from then to 100K not sure who was doing the service.

With only 1000km since I owned it, I didn't like how the engine sounded, seemed like it was knocking when it was cold.

On a very cold day last week, the check engine light came on, but no code on the check control. I don't have the scanner, but have since ordered it.

Well, Saturday I decide to change the oil. I look in the owners guide and it says 5w30 full synthetic for all temperatures. I also noticed the oil cap says "recommend Castrol". Anyway, I decide to put Syntec full synthetic 5w30 in it. The car is night and day different now. No more knock, code cycled and reset itself and feels more powerful.

I noticed from the reminder on the window that someone put 0w40 in it before. Any idea why? Does anyone run that oil in a 3.0L six? I'm just trying to understand if people make different oil choices based on experience or if the last tech was just an idiot and/or had nothing else available?

I know in my Mustang, it calls for 5w30, but I put 10w30 and it actually runs better. What oil should be run in the 3.0L?

The stuff from the BMW Parts counter. Consult your owner's manual for the specs required if you insist on finding something elsewhere.

i dont have an e90 but i use ams oil 10w 30 synthetic in my car. no complaints here.

Interesting.......performance crowds usually goes with a little thicker synthetic oil as protection. In some most cases the weight is decided by the manufac to produce certain mileage ratings, emissions, etc and I've heard of many pre-mature failures using OEM grades and less using thicker oils but with a trade off on mileage etc.

I'm just surprised 41 views and no more comments. Oil threads go on for pages and pages on the mustang forums. lol.

MTREE if you use a thicker than spec oil you're sacrificing start up protection. Just stick with the stuff BMW recommends. ACEA A3/B3 rated 5W-30. I use nothing but the BMW oil.

I was running Castrol Syntec 5w30, then tried Bwm High Performace Synthetic 5w30 oil. Had to switch back to Castrol Syntec. i had to keep adding when i had the Bmw oil in. Once again back to Castrol and no issues.

I dont have and E90, but I use Amsoil as well in my e36. I started with 5w30, but swtiched to 15w50 in the summer as I experianced some lifter noise at the track.

Although many people say stick to 5w30, (and they are not wrong) if you are performance minded and drive your car as more then just a commuter, I wouldn't think twice about putting in a thicker weight atleast for the summer.

I'll be switching back to Amsoil 5w30 for the winter. 0w oils scare me though. Unless your car makes a 5 min commute and barly makes it up to operating temp I dont understand why someone would make that tradeoff. But I am not an oil expert. Perhaps someone can fill me in.

You should be using a LL01 approved oil for example dealer 5w30, german castrol syntec 5w30(says on back of bottle made in germany) or mobil one 0w40 these are all LL01 approved oils.

A 5w and 0w refer to the Oil thickness when cold. The thinner the oil when cold the better because thats when the most engine wear happens. The 30 in 5w30 and 0w30 refers to the oil thickness when warm. The mobil one is a 40 weight besause its a thin weight 40 compared to the 30 weight oils.

I understand the whole hot and cold rating system. But I always thought that the higher the weight, the more viscous the oil was. A lighter weight oil becomes more thin and water like at high temps. So a 0w oil will be much less viscous at start up providing much more protection initially, yet it will become almost useless at extreme temps. Is that wrong?

Remember the 0w is the cold temp thickness simply put and the 30 is the hot temp thickness of the oil.

I'm not an oil expert but you can find lots of info at bob the oil guy website in regards to high temp and high shear values for oils. The 335i has certain high temp and high shears values for its oil. The 335i can use any oil that has the LL01 rating.

dealers use castrol syntec...so i guess put castrol??? i dont have E90 but i use lubromoly 5w40 synthetic in my E36 328is
