I thought I was going to buy this car until...

Right now I'm driving a 95 318i. It drives well, but I have to sink a lot of money into it soon if I wanna get it back to max operating potential. It needs brakes, rotors, will need new tires soon, could use a new exhaust system, etc etc.

Now I wasn't looking to buy a new car. But I saw a 97 328i down the street from me at a dealer. Asking $5000. It has 180k on it, but it drove great, engine sounded really clean, and the body looks in near perfect condition. I did find some rust on the rockers, but nothing serious, just surface rust. I took it for a spin and was loving every minute.

However, he had mentioned that it had been in an accident, front right side, and that it was about 8k in damages about 6 years ago. He said he had the carproof and that he would email it to me. I never got the email, so I called him today and he sent it. And I was not impressed.

Is this car even worth considering now? Whats a fair value for it? And if its still worth considering, what would you recommend me to do from here?

I included some pictures of the car below, and a crappy video I took with my iphone. And of course, the dreaded carproof screenshot.

10K of damage in 05 means the whole front end was smoked.

The repair was done 6 years ago and from the pix. the repair looked good and paint is sustaining? no rust around that area?

Like you said you were not looking to buy a car and if you are.. look for other 1997 328 and compare the price and condition, after that and if you still like this 328.. get it check and negotiate lower than the $5000 he is asking for...

It's not $8-10Gs worth of damage! It was $21,000 in damages! The estimate was almost $10Gs and police reporting centres allllllways end up estimating too low because they can't see how much damage was done underneath. $21Gs is massive damage.

Why not just get this from a member on the site? And it's cheaper...

Why buy a car, when you already know that it has been in a car accident?

Or just keep hanging around. With the change in season upon us, lots of cars seem to come up for sale since they get pulled out of storage and the such.

Anything above $5k in damages I would stay away from for sure.

An accident isn't end all be all for not buying a car. My wife had one where the damage was over $5000, but it was because the other car scraped all the body panels on one side - no structural, etc.

Don't do it man, search around, I found a same car 97'328 for 3000$. Owned and maintained by an asian couple... so you know its good You don't want one of the welds/repairs to go on you... and after six years... it might just be ready to fall apart... 5000$ for a wreck, I'm in shock!

Most of old cars on the road road these days have been in SOME sort of an accident, at some point in time, even if not shown in any records. Not ALL cars go to scrap after an accident!

No such thing as "not serious rust"...May not look like much, but it will grow, and the rocker is last place you want rust...Other body panels you can replace, but rockers and 1/4 not so much. I say walk away! Much better to spend another $2K and get your call fully upgraded.

Well I called today to find out if he had any records on where the car was repaired, and what exactly was repaired. He said he didn't have any.

I went on to say how the car proof had 20k listed as damages but the estimate was only 10 gs so they clearly took short cuts and probably why the A/C didn't work. He said the A/C didn't work because the compressor had a leak.

I told him that it was too risky for me and that I was going to look around some more...

Now that said, I gotta admit the car looks damn clean, and it drove pretty damn good. If I take it in for an inspection, and it all checks out, what would be a fair offer for me to make?

One very important thing is to NEVER trust Carproof! It is the most worthless thing i have seen. I have to get it when i purchase my part car, and MORE then one come out clean, even tho i am getting it from a Salvage Auction! I can get better information on toilet paper then Carproof!
