I was going to say 50 years behind, but since almost none of you were here then, it wouldn't make much sense. I had just arrived here 50 years ago, and we lived about .8 km east of Bayview, just south of Sheppard. Back then there was not even a bus on Sheppard, you had to hitchhike or walk to Yonge St to catch the subway.

Would you rather see your taxes triple than what they are now ?
or settle for the old transit system ??
You choose !
btw, I took the subway for the 1st time in 5-6 years last night to watch a Leaf game.
The system runs well ! No complaints

that's not the point. the point is they dropped the ball on this a long time ago. taxes wouldn't need to be 3x higher to fix everything if it was modernized, maintained and adapted to modern needs of the time.

Do you have any idea how much money it takes, just to run the TTC !?!?! Nevermind expanding and modernizing it ! Raising fares and taxes alone can barely help run it nevermind modernizing it.
Private investment and government funds is what it needs thrown at it ! $$$

that is only because it wasn't done in real-time. other cities on this planet seem to manage. its called bad management. now they're just spending enough to keep it from falling apart and that is happening anyway. at some point they'll have to do something or it will all implode. maybe the city will need to take a loan and pay it off over 100 years so that it doesn't raise taxes instantaneously. or we just move toronto to a new location once it all collapses.

I absolutely despise streetcars, the tracks are worse to drive on than rutted gravel roads, they're loud from all the screeching on the tracks and they always hold up traffic so much because everybody is afraid of passing them and of course nobody can move when the doors are open. The rest of the civilized world came up with a solution a good 60 years ago:
The TTC is atrocious no matter how you put it, and that won't change unless someone wants to throw a couple billion dollars at it. And I never heard about Miller wanting to bring down the Gardiner, it's the only reason the drive to my gf's house only takes 35 minutes, without it I would spend an hour on the 401, I can't even imagine how long it would take without using a highway.
I wish I could say I don't care about public transit, but even living in north etobicoke I still use it whenever I go downtown, I'd rather spend twice the time getting there and back than pay $10 an hour for parking. And speaking of getting downtown, why does is there a damn bus stop ever block? On a busy day the bus can't even get up to speed before stopping again.

I've almost hit pedestrians twice when they get off the streetcars.
driving up beside it, looking for pedestrians on the right crossing the intersection, wham, doors swing open, streetcar honks his horn, I slam on the brakes a few feet from the ****tards.
Very unsafe.

Most politicians don't care about the city or people, all they care about is their own pockets.
