clunking noise...help pls

When it starts cold in the morning or after work just right at shifting from 1st gear to 2nd gear (mine is 2002Ci auto), there is clunking noise that sometimes comes from the driver side front wheel area or from the rear underneath in the middle. The clunking noise sounds like the muffler holder is loose or somthing. Once the car is warm up, I don't hear it anymore when starting at traffic light.

If the muffler holder is loose, why it sometimes happens from front too? Very strange.

Your commets are appreciated.

If its the muffler, than its MAY be loose, metal expands as it warms up, but this isn't as likely as you would think

This clunking noise from underneath the engine bay area I believe. Something is making noise when it starts cold in the morning. What other possible cause of this will be?

Thanks

If your car is auto.. why are you shifting from 1st to 2nd?

It is a loud CLUNK noise or a vibration sound. See if the sound occurs when you put the car in D, no shifting. If it does not then could be something with your tranny, if it does, then you need to do further investigating.

I didn't do the shift myself. The clunking noise occurs when it shifts from 1 to 2, or 2 to 3 as I notice. It doesn't always reoccur once it clunks because I try to stop and go again and it doesn't clunk again most of the time. I think there could be something that is loose and makes noise in that resonance range.

I'll be going in for service but it's hard to pin point the problem to them.

Thanks for your commets anyhow.

I'm getting a similar noise from either tranny or maybe front diff. When I shift from D to park or reverse, hear a clunk as engages.... Also here the same clunk when shutting car off. My driveway is on slight incline, so I thought it might be the tranny lock, but also happens on flat surface too. Car has 225,000; 2004 330Xi, original tranny fluid (never changed)..... noticed what appears to be oil leaking from front diff fill hole and possibly from where front diff mounts to oil pan.... thoughts? suggestions?

thanks guys. WIll check it toight. We checked the tranny mounts when we changed the engine mounts, and they seemed to test fine, but will take a closer look.... Howver, it's much more of a mechanical CLUNK, than what I'd expect a bad mount to sound like.....

Never got to check tranny mounts; got tied-up helping with one of his client's cars and never got back to it. Going to try and get a look tonight or tomorrow. I did check the tranny mounts about 6 months ago when I replaced engine mounts (which were dead) and they looked ok. Did check front diff mount and engine mounts (before being called to help) and they were fine. Could be front diff although William doesn't think so. He called the clunk (which only happens ocassionally) normal. Tranny lock engaging (as it's more prominent on an inclined surface, than flat ground; but still happens)..... Still not happy with it, so I will definitely be looking @ tranny mounts and diff mounts again in ext couple of days...
