I've programmed camera systems for visual inspection before, mostly NI labview. I can say there are very clear dimensions used for descriptions of what the processing software is looking for. The plates should be a certain size, location(s), possibly even colour, etc. If the camera does not find the plate it would flag the picture as a fail and pass it to a human operator for further inspection.
That being said I agree that this is most likely a joke, and quite humourous.
