If a little guy in a home garage can make this, what are all the big car makers
doing in all their giant labs? What have all the Detroit automakers been doing?

How practical is that car? it has a back seat and a trunk full of batteries? The video doesn't talk about how far he can go on a charge or how he plans on disposing of the batteries once they are dead.
I'm not trying to take anything away from this guy, he did a great job building that car. I'm just trying to say that for widespread use it's not as easy as strapping a bunch of car batteries together and attaching them to a big electric motor.
That being said, yeah if they wanted to they could probably release an awesome electric car tomorrow... why don't they? Two words: Big Oil.
Electric motors accelerate to full power instantly matter of seconds, sustaining useful power for long periods seems to be an issue without having to haul a coal plant behind you. Electric vehicles in my opinion are just a game being played by governments. Convenient and efficient public transportation.

There IS a better way then gas...but its just a matter of politics and $$$...

hes forgetting where that electricity to power that datsun is coming from, most likely either a coal, nuclear, or hydo plant; all of which are harmful to the environment. he must consider the full life cycle impacts of that car from the batteries to where its energy comes from. i wouldnt be surprised if it had a equal or greater environmental impact that a standard gas engine. so if he really wanted to be a pioneer, hed power it with a renewable energy source.
just my two cents

ok come on....you're bringing issues into the equation re: environmental impact? What the "F" are we all doing on here? Are we contributing or are we taking away from the environment? Lets all do away and just go back to horse and buggy and get true horse power from there? oh wait..will we be discussing the environmental impact of horse shit on the streets and how it stinks up everything and doesn't look pretty? is horse shit a renewable resource? (grin) well it's great for compost. We can bring back street cleaners and produce jobs?
was Ford thinking about the environment when he built his first car? Lets all go solar..

just the fact that hes saying hes a pioneer and that he never put out any greenhouse gases is incorrect. It's not about producing greenhouse gases, but whether the amounts produced are sustainable. stuff like that really pisses me off, but id still love to take that datsun for a run!
