I think input is what we're looking for. ... but it still doesn't make sense.

I think he means hi level inputs versus low level.
Hi level is when you tap into the existing factory speaker wires to get signal.
Low input is when you're using RCA's for example off the deck directly.
Hi-level is a band-aid solution and makes life simple for installation. Not the preferred choice but still works.
