how to buy winter tires?

just bought a 2011 328i sport package cab and the tire size is usually 225/40/18(front) 255/35/18(rear)

the dealership threw in a set of 16s for free so i took them but i dont know if i can drop down 2 sizes. someone mentioned in sport models the calipers are bigger so it might not fit?

the tires already on the extra set of rims are 205/55/16... doesn't match the usual tire size.
i did read somewhere that for winters, we should get thinner tires? so should i be getting all same tire size all around or stick with the staggered?

can anyone help me confirm these questions?

They should fit. Test them on the car to see if they clear the calipers. All 328i calipers are the same.

Staggered is mostly a preference to begin with, and not a requirement.

205/55/16 is almost exactly the same overall profile as both 225/40/18 and 255/35/18, and will have the same revolutions per mile as your current summer wheels.

The theory that thinner tires work better does have some traction (pun intended), as the car's weight can better dig into the snow & ice with a smaller footprint.

16" wheels will clear your calipers, as they are an OE size for the 2011 328i.

I agree that narrower tires are good for getting through snow as well as slush and water.
