540 Muffler/Silencer Delete **[VIDEO]** BF.C content

Bimmerforums.com guys seem to be loving their cut off exhausts. Does sound nice on the V8s

Anyone here done this? Potential issues with this mod?

No kidding. It's like an epidemic...

I'm toying with the idea of doing somethign to the exhaust this summer, just not sure what yet. Ideally it would be a true dual but the tubing would run parallel to the back and exit out the one side with a dual tip.

Or I could just use a sawzall...

Sounds good but has anyone though of the fact that the exhaust is a tuned length and shortening it can cause problems ie. the exhaust valves or the head running at a higher temps. With a tuned system you can gain in one area and lose in another.

Not to burst anyone's bubble just a conservative point of view, ...it's your car do what makes you happy.

pros: sounds bad ass

cons: it sounds so bad ass that you'll be deaf by the time you get to your destination.

apparently it drones a lot, I've been wanting to do it for a while now as I've got the magnaflow on the back, but that's the only thing that stops me, once the weather is warmer and time for another oil change, I'll probably force Rocco to do it.

After all, I used to drive my Volvo as a daily for a while, so my hearing ain't as good as it should be already.

Mark what if straight pipe is added to the cut section as an extention? This way it would compensate for the length of the deleted muffler.

That should work.

I know two guys with Porsche 928s that run without muflers, they have V8 engines and sound the same as the video but they run full length exhausts. You will have to ease off the gas when cops are around or risk getting a ticket.

Thats whats worrying me. Unless you can prove its stock. Some how weld the muffler can to the pipe so it acts as a decoy.

With an open exhaust system that you can hear a mile away that won't fool them...they'll get you for noise violations, the video doesn't really tell you how truly loud your exhaust will be when you crack the throttle. It's going to be loud, take it from someone who had the exhaust bolts fall off his E39 driving through a puddle... it's LOUD, like driving a stock car only not going quite as fast.

If you want that throaty V8 sound get a Magna flow or Borla system... there are others as well that aren't as loud as open exhaust.

If you leave Y resonator alone just take out muffler and silenter there is no droning.. If you cut of Y resonator and silenter and only leave muffler than you will hear small droning under load.

I did this.

Cut off the pipe entering both cans in the back.

Observations:
1. As loud as stock unless you're pressing hard on the gas.
2. Loud at high revs with lots of gas, but no louder than a "performance" exhaust.
3. Loud at start-up, but just a little.
4. Resonator can had like 1L of water in it.

I don't mind it at all, in fact it was and easy and effective mod for a little nicer sound.

So this is what i did...for now...

IMG_0130.JPG
IMG_0133.JPG

Sounds amazing on start up, and very nice as you accelerate. Interior noise is same as with the silencer in place. Not loud, and sounds just right

Silencer was full of water, as mentioned above.
The weight that the silencer carried gets automatically transferred to the driver's foot cause you wanna step on it and hear the growl hahaa.

Personally im not a fan of exhausts and noise that they make, but this is a very nice tone. Im contemplating on cutting the muffler and running a staright pipe...not sure yet tho.

I don't know yet, I've only driven 500 km or so, and nothing noticeable. I did basically what you did, except cut in front of the resonator and the muffler.

I bet they sound pretty similar, if I understand fluid mechanics correctly, pressure would build in the muff and make most of the exhaust exit through the now open pipe.

I have a vid that im gonna upload. There is still a decent amount of smoke coming out of the muffler end.

Did you leave you pipe as is or did you weld in a straight piece to the end of the bumper?
