Educate me on VW's. (1999-2002 passat/jetta)

My girlfriend needs a car. Anyone owned one of these? Problem areas? Model year changes?

She'll get an auto cause she's lazy.

TIA

What particullar model are you after?
If its the turbo there is a comon fault with the coolant system. Nothing major but quite fidly to fix as it leaks between the engine and firewall.
They seem to like eating links and track rod ends. Also i ve heared a common fault is the doors at the back dont open.
Make sure timing belts were and are changed just before the service as they are known to snap as soon as you get to that mark (e.g. 100.000km in the book means change at 95.000).
Other than that if you go for an NA model i havent heared any major issues apart from the VW stealer being way expensive!

I dont take anything to the dealer.

Probably a 1.8T. Got a link for the coolant problem?

If the 1.8T's are really bad i can look for something else, but most of the cars around here seem to be the 4cyls.

They are not bad. 1.8T is a great engine with allot of potential. Timing belts are crucial though and make sure the catalysor is ok as on high boost they melt them.
Upgrade parts though are easy (from other VW group cars say Audi S3).
i will try and find a link for the coolant problem but i know it from a friend who works for Audi and they have this happening all the time on older A4 1.8T

Jettas = electrical problems

Pay attention to the Jettas on the road. Guaranteed that either driver or passenger side tail is out and maybe hadlight.

cant even full throttle without it cutting out....

once the car is done being used, its GONE!
if she needs a car for temporary sake, its fine....otherwise dont do it!! (passat, i cannot speak for the jetta though...)

Did you inspect the car before you got it? I feel like that's something you could catch.

That's not an electrical problem... it's just the bulb tray that causes that... not a big deal at all.. Some bending here and there and it's all good.

Dude.... the car obviously has problems due to neglect. Just because you don't know anything about cars doesn't mean anything.

propr'one:

Honestly, the big issue about the Passat of these years mentioned is the same as my car (same platform -B5-)... Control arms and wheel bearings. Plan for these approx. every 100-120k km. Not that big of a deal especially if you don't lower the car or drive it hard which I'm sure his GF won't do.

The 1.8T is solid. Other then the early cars had problems with oil sludge due to owners not doing proper oil change intervals and not using synthetic. So if you're looking at an older 1.8T, try to get one with docs showing proper oil changes were done. Listen for clunks and squeeks in the suspension and humming for the wheel bearings. If you're looking @ an automatic, listen for clunks, hard shifting, or slippage. But for the most part the trannys are ok.
