Does it really matter if a garage door hit it or a car?

Honesty in the used car business is hard to find.

A garage door hitting the windshield should NOT set off the airbags. A front impact will, however. That, with the other bodywork, makes me wonder if this thing went into a spin.

I would not go near this without a full prepurchase inspection from an independent source. Don't make the mistake I did, and get blinded by wanting a certain car.

I would run far far away from this car, regardless of price. I would wait for a clean version to come around. Auto 528's are all over the place, so it won't be hard to find a better one.

The story is way too sketchy. Also carfax is pretty useless, use a carproof instead. It's 1000% better.

I've got a vin sticker on one fender, and the other one looks like it had one but has come off, as well I have the vin engraved into one of the strut towers.

Peel away the plastic shrink wrap, press the roll flat on the floor, console or seat... voila! Drink goes in the center. Once it sticks, it's not half bad! Wider rolls work better.

Especially handy if you have a V8 E39 BMW since you also can use the tape to try to patch your radiator when it detonates. ; )

LMAO. No use...It's like sticking your finger in a leaky dam, it'll just start to leak somewhere else

+1.

Gerage door popped the air bags... that is a obvious crock of sh*t salesman lie.
The air bags do not even turn them selves on till you exceed 60 KPH.
Who does 60k leaving or parking their car in a gerage? Lol.
My geuss is the car was bought from an auction from most likly a reputable dealer that sent it their that couldn't sell it due to it's damaged title.

Tested this too... I fixed a 98 323 is after a head on collision @ 40 - 50 KPH that didn't deploy the air bags as it wasn't going fast enough to need them.

I'd run from any E39 but I'd especialy run from this one.

Thanks everyone for response. Here is an update.

I went to Ottos, and the gentleman showed me the service on screen.
Lets see if I remember correctly:

"Customer complaint: airbags deployed after boosting the car, thus breaking windshield"

So some stuff that were changed: airbags, battery, airbag modules, windshield, and some other parts I cant remember.

They have no idea how he got that VIN sticker, and I know for sure both front doors, leaft 1/4 panel and front bumper cover were painted.
I am running away from this one.

Oh well that means I'm waiting for that 530i.

Smart move. I think you'll be happier in the long run. Especially if you get the 530i.

Remember though the seller wasn't even sure what exactly happened or what was done, he said to go to Ottos and ask themselves. He is just selling the car. I wonder where he came up with that story.

Oh well to my surprise the 528 auto had a decent acceleration. Those E39s are really comfy and I love the interior layout. Simply elegant.
I'm sure 530i will be even better.

I juts bought an E39.. It had passed safety and I trusted my kowledge for BMW.. Turns out I know nothing about BMW... I got the car, 6000Km down the road.. Left Upper Control Arm, Sway bar links (Front) and the best Power Steering rack leaking..
I still love my car.. But I do not know how to work on them.. $$$$$$$$ ..

Sweet Rides, Expensive to fix...

Enjoy Jay
