FYI, all BMWs manufacturer 1/95+ have chipped keys, yours has a chip just no remote functions.

If you get one cut from your existing key, it will likely be worn as well (had a friend's car that would only sometimes work the door but always worked the other locks, got a new key from BMW and it worked everything perfectly).

Shop around from BMW, if I recall, the non-lighted master key (black head) was the cheapest out of the lot but prices vary from dealer to dealer.

I can copy the keys but it will be of no use if I'm tracing a worn key and it doesn't have the chip.

PM me for your sidewinder (laser cut) key blank and cutting needs. Have OEM pre-ews keys and replacement shells.

I was there earlier today, they quoted 69 for a master, and around 70 each for a valet and wallet key. The guy at the parts counter was just as confused as me.

Also, where is this chip? I couldn't for the life of me find it when I took apart my key. But like I said before, I'm pretty sure I can key my key copied because the ridges themselves are fine, it's just that they taper off, so as long as the cutter can trace them it should be fine.

And that guide for repairing the lock cylinder seems like it wouldn't apply to me, my key doesn't turn sometimes, as if it's the wrong key. The guide is for when you turn the key and it doesn't lock//unlock.

Is there a way to get a newer style key cut for a E46? My E46 key is big and bulky compared to the newer "pop-out" ones?

I can cut the new shell, you swap the chip from one of your current keys and get a used remote to program.

I have been wanting to do that as well. Does anyone know where to get one?

Would the dealer do that?

I got extra BMW keys laser cut at:

Able Lock Service
676 Wilson Ave.
Toronto ON
Tel. (416) 638-3606

Ask for Howard Kerr

Paid $12.00 per key cut and took 5 mins to cut each key (bought OEM blanks on eBay).

Extra keys work perfectly on the car.

sorry for bringing up an old post but...
the blanks on eBay had a transponder in them, or did you buy just the blade and swap it into another key shell w/ transponder?

I have a key w/ transponder from a previous vehicle. And a new vehicle with only 1 key. I want to cut another 'blade' only and transplant it into the other key housing w/ transponder. Seems easy to transplant when I opened it up. Just need to go through the EWS program sequence with the new key. How did you do it with your car? (I'm assuming the 03 M3 mentioned in your profile).

Is this possible? I thought that the only way to get a transponder programmed to your car was to buy a new key that comes with it.

I know it's technically possible, but didn't think BMW did it.
or do you have another source to program an EWS transponder to your car?

No problem. Glad to help. The blank keys I bought off eBay did not have a transponder. It was a blank BMW key (only a shell) with simply the key blade. I didn't need the extra keys with a transponder. They were extra keys for the door/trunk in case of emergencies or if I misplaced my main keys.

I had to get a new key ordered though a BMW dealership cuz it is the only place you can get a key cut, i have a e36 so the key was chipped and its didnt cost 130.00 for a new key and it cut. Now this is straight from my account GRAND TOURING BMW $86.59 taxes in!! Thats not bad at all for a new chipped key cut straight from germany !!

BMW won't do it (the dealer). Not because they don't want to, they don't have the equipment to do so. You have to remove the EWS box on EWS 2/3 units and read the chip inside. As far as I know there isn't any way of doing EWS 2/3 via OBD either.

The process is kind of a pain to do.
