Anywhere I can get a key cut?
Is there any place that could cut a blank key for my car based on the VIN number? My key's worn out so a copy is pointless, and the dealer said it'll cost around $130 for them to cut me a key because they have to actually order it from Germany.

$130 is actually quite cheap from the dealer... I'm assuming that doesn't include the chip if we're talking about your E36?

Yea, my key doesn't have a chip so the guy at the dealer even said it's cheap compared to other keys. But still, I'm not willing to spend more than half of that to get a key.

e36 keys are laser cut. i dont know where else besides the dealer, who would be able to get you another copy, since yours is worn.

That's the point, I need to find a place that would cut the key based on a database of key cuts and their respective VIN numbers. The guy at the dealer did say some place might be able to do it.

Sorry bud, the dealership is only place because it is laser cut. That kind of information re: database is unavailable and only exclusive to bmw. unless I am mistaken and out of touch with current policy. bmw is very strict with this policy to avoid car theft.so, break down, drop the coin and order your key. 130.00 for a key from bimmer is cheap in comparison. the longer you wait the longer the 10 business days will take.

you have no choice but the dealer.
Your only option was to buy a blank and have someone cut it for you. But since you said your key is worn, your out of luck.

Actually I noticed that the ridges on the key are perfectly fine, it's just that they taper off toward the edges instead of just going down in a 90 degree angle like my friend's E39 key. I'm pretty sure it can still be copied. THanks for the number Parm, I'll try them out.

I assume it's worn because it works perfectly on the trunk and ignition, but I can only sometimes lock the front doors. It also looks incredibly worn compared to my friend's key.
But which dealership did you get did you get the key at? How long does it take to come from the dealership?

i had performance bmw in st catharines do it for me, took a day or two to get. need to go in with your ownership and photo id. buds should be able to get you one too .
it is only a valet key so it doesnt work on trunk or glovebox, only doors and ignition.
the central locking will still unlock the trunk, only difference being that if you master lock the trunk you cant get it open again

i have that same issue, but my key's are far from worn. It's most likely the lock in locks in the doors themselves.

i think this may be what we both have to do.

You can replace a e36 master key for 56.50$ at maranello. There's a bunch of ways to get that price (15% off retail for BMWCCA memebers, Canadian tire employees, people who ask nicely)
