Whistle at startup

Morning everyone,

Recently when we'v been having -10 weather these days, i'd get a loud whine/ whistle from the engine bay at cold startup. Sound goes away after few minutes of idling. Dont know if this would help or not but also theres this burnt smell coming from exhaust when its cold. Things i'v changed so far are idle/adjust pulleys and both belts. Any ideas?

Common problem, its from the auxilary air pump...they start to whine when they get old. They only work at start up, so noise goes away soon. Chances are it will stop working soon!

So what happens if the aux air pump fails? Is it only for emissions?

My 325is is making that noise and also finding some weird vacum leaks at cold temps too, can hear them under the hood and seem to be coming from around the pump. All goes away once it is warmed up. Would make sense it's around that air pump with the cold weather. Hope to get some time next weekend to look at it

*Update

So i had a time to pop the hood this morning after starting the car. Sound isn't coming from the pump area, its coming from the drivers side. Its either alternator or adjust pulley which has been changed 3k ago. Most likely alternator. Is there anyway of getting rid of it without having to replace the whle alt?

Also check power steering pump, it sits in the same area...and they can make noise at cold start up.

it's sounds like your alternator pulley really easy to change . 16 wrench/socket out she comes stick a screw driver and put your ear on it when the car is running make sure u don't drop the screw driver and have a listen or poor small amount of water on it should go away for 5 seconds if it was changed 3k there is 3 pulleys on your car did they change all 3?? to elimate the ac pulley put on your ac and see if the noise get louder

Pulley? I thought its the alternator bearing that goes, which is inside the alternator.

The last pulley is by the a/c and the sound isn't coming from that area.
