That is awful, 8 years for graffiti. I can imagine the conversation in jail:

What are you in for?
Murder and rape, 9 year conviction. How about you?
Spray painting stuff, should be out by the time I'm 26.

Wow, yeah that's pretty harsh. He should have killed someone while he was out tagging, then he would have only gotten 5 years.

its the 3 strike system they have in the USA man... said he had been convicted of other offences as well... something about marijuana?

the US system is retarded. but canada is heading that way too

why not make him pay back and pay for the damage? 7,000$ in damage, thats not alot.

he'll most likely get out in 2-3 for good behavior maybe sooner. The judge wanted to set an example to others who participate in this sort of conduct. Also, to scare the shit outta him to hopefully make him think long and hard and just maybe make him do something constructive with the rest of his life. He most likely doesn't have the 7g's to pay back. Usa isn't is good economic times so it's not like he can swing getting a job. To you and I it's pennies. lots to those who don't have it.

So then do the math.

He can either work minimum wage or try get a better job and get out of his pridacment and pay it back in 3-5 years. Or he can go to jail for 8 years and not pay it back.

so whats harsh about the punishment? Work for 5 years straight at minimum wage to save it up... or jail for 8? AT least if hes working hes working to wards something. He can advance, search for jobs, meet constructive people.

Goes to jail he meets destructive people. he gets out hes in no better shape then when he went in.

USA is bad, but its not that bad. There are still jobs out there to be had. Those who want to work bad enough, they find the jobs.

8 years seems harsh. not that what he did was right but that's a long time behind bars.
