Had bosch platinum +4 and replaced it with ngk's with a single electrode.

Gonna put back the bosch +4s ... better fuel consumption.

I wouldn't recommand those Bosch Platinum +4, they burn too hot causing the car to run like shit, also causes misfires, I know of many other 540 owners that had the same problem with those plugs, I ran into the same problem in my 98 540, if the car didn't come with platinum plugs I wouldn't put those in, the NGK Iridiums are pretty good or just the plain Bosch single electrode.

Stay with NGK BKR6EQUP (4 electrode) this is the best plug for this motor.

Mark.

Dinan would you mind posting a link to the page? Did you order those yourself?

Quack i also spoke with Mark (MLue) and he strongly disagrees with the bosch plugs. He too says that NGK are best way to go.

Are you running single ground or +4?

Thanks for the heads up Quack!

The car had a misfire which made me decide to replace the plugs. But the plugs were submerged in oil due to bad valve cover gaskets!

I'll keep the ngk's for now. I'll replace the air filter and see if that's causing the poor fuel consumption.

NGK BKR6EQUP (4 electrode) plugs came in my car from the factory (2003 540i) so that is what I replaced them with. The factory plugs were still in perfect shape at 80K kms when I replaced them - brownish colour no noticeable eroding. The car is now at 90K kms and still runs perfectly smooth with the new plugs. I personally would not use any other plugs since my factory trained tech is of the same opinion.

Just another data point

Maybe this is a mute point but ....the plugs used in the '98 V8 engine that the OP (Dado) has is different that the plugs used in the '99 and later models.

Went by Maranello a few days ago and the service parts guy tells me that he sells the same spark plugs NGKs for all E39 M62s. Im not sure they know what they are talking about.

The M62TU engines are in the '99 and later E39.

I had RMP put Iridiums in my car the last time I was there... I don't recall the brand off the top of my head but they have been great so far! Rocco recommended them...
