E39 E-brake Cable

Trying to replace the drivers side rear wheel carrier on my 540i. I've got everyting off except the emergency brake cable which will not come out. I have no idea how it's supposed to pop out and no idea why it won't. Any info would be appreciated.

Should just pull out, but after 12 years (chances are it was never removed), it might be hard to do! Try soaking it with WD40, and then just use visegrips to work it loose!

That's what I assumed. But no go. Should the Metal collar come with the cable or just the plastic sheath?

Crappy. If I cut it off I'd have to run complete lines right? Which is a pita on the E39 I believe. Bugger is super seized in.

Try this:

Pack the hole with grease. Find something that is a close fit (almost same diameter as the hole) and place it at the start of the hole. HIT it hard with the hammer. This will act like a hydraulic press and it should pop out.

This method is commonly used to get the pilot bearings out of the rear of the crankshaft. It works really well, but can me a little messy.

I think you have to do that anyways! I don't see the cable there, so I assume it was cut, and you can't run a new one...

Cable was just hidden in the spindle. Managed to get it off. My dad brought over a set of torches and with a little heat it popped right out. Helps to have the tools I guess.

On a related note when removing the spindle from the axle, the other end popped out of the diff. Does it just slide back in? Also, would I need to replace the seal or will it re-seat when the axle is re-inserted?

Yeah, just pops back in! Should be fine with the old seal, as long as you didn't damage it

Good stuff. If the ball joints spin when you try and take the nuts off are they still good? I don't have any play in them and didn't have any problems but I'm thinkin they won't tighten up when put back in. (I'm refering to the Control Arms and sway bar links.)
