They're not bad to work on. Yeah more money for plugs, more money for oil. But they are pretty reliable if you keep on top of maintenance. If my swap doesn't sell I'm going to m60 my touring.

Your question has two parts to it....Not only how the M20 and M30 are...But how they work in a 5 series!!! Altho the M20 is a great motor, it does NOT belong in a heavy E34...

The M30 on the other hand is bulit proof...just do regular maintenance like people mentioned before, and you are good for 500K km...

The transmission is another story, seen more then one with problems on the 5spd...I guess they cant take the abuse of the Torque Monster!

Plus buddy seems pretty desperate so I'd offer him 3K cash if the car looked ok and he'd prolly take it.

Really? You guys are talking about manual tranny not auto? So if manual is that bad in 535, automatic would not be bad idea.

Yeah, having auto is like having a hooker, unless you are 60.

Point taken. I wonder what happened to Julian's (Gamite) 535? Where is that car? If that had been stick, that would have been still around in some max member's hands.

Are you guys talking about the later transmission in the e34's or the earlier ones in the e28s and others?

I'll admit, I kinda need another trans because i sold my GOOD one to Msinger and the one I installed the 3rd gear syncro is dead so if i shift fast into 3rd it grinds a bit. Thats what I get for buying a trans i didn't get to test b4 buying
