interesting...in theory...I have not heard anyone as yet attempt to go through this procedure. the reason they did this is to cut down on car thefts. If too many keys are floating around it makes it much easier to lift. However, I would figure btt you wasted all your 10 keys this model will be junk..lol.

so what about changing owners, when you take an old car and pass it through hands a few times 10 keys isnt that much, not to mention how would you manage such an inventory?
theres no way they make 10 keys and keep stock of them, can you imagine being the guy tasked to inventory that or worse find a specific key lol

I personally don't believe they "make" 10 keys. they have an electronic inventory system which keeps track of how many keys were made and shipped.
3 keys are produced in the beginning of the cars life. Regardless of who owns the car; are you gonna buy a car without a key or at least a pair? umm..that should set of warning lights..lol

Bro what the heck? Just the other day you were telling me you've got news for me. That news being that its true that there is 10 keys that have been made for my car and 7 of them are sitting in Germany right now. Now you're saying you personally don't believe that? I don't get it am I missing something?

I have, on several occasions! And the key gets made in a few days!
(or maybe they send it overnight from Germany )
If the 10 key story is right, then they should have FAR more then that, as there are several types of keys, and they dont know which one you need untill you ORDER it! From the "all plastic" spare, to the $300 remote key...They must have 30-40 keys in stock

^ so from what i know...which is not much, its not that there are 10 keys in actual existance...there are 10 key codes which correspond to your car. 3 keys are made for the car using up 3 of the codes....7 codes remain for when you need a new key made for whatever reason. the key gets programmed with the code. not sure if its for the immobilizer or some other security feature of the car.

hey man relax..no need to get into a hissy. the point being made is you have up to 10 keys allowed for your vehicle. whether they have 7 actual keys in Germany waiting with your name on it or seven virtual keys in the computer system makes no diff. they keep inventory of this; for what specific security reason I am not entirely sure of but theft was one that was given to me. this isn't personal, it's just the way they operate as far as e46 models concerned.

OP, PinkieMoscow is correct in my experience... just buy a 2-4, invite everybody who responds to thread over for free beer, check all the e30 keys at this impromptu meet, copy one that works...
Or wait 5 days. Heh.

FYI it is true that many e30 keys are interchangeable, not sure of the percentage exactly, but I have seen it done a few times....once on my car
