buy a lock and key from eurostyle and replace the cylinder,

Or just hotwire the car until the key comes in, drive it like you stole it.

The fact that they choose to make 10 to begin with must be based on some statistic, or why not produce 5 instead......

Do you have a citation for this? I dont believe this. You think BMW keeps 7 x 2,000,000 (a conservative e46 production number i think), 14 million e46 keys?

I would think they have either a code and cut the key on request, rather than keeping stock of millions of keys,

i don't know whether they do or not but if they did its a waste of time and money. most people probably won't lose keys or require copies. and even if some do an extra 7 keys would be overkill.

^^^this, there's no way that BMW is stupid enough to stock MILLIONS of keys....it's a code in the computer they have and that's it.

A lot of people fail to realize that about 30% of e30 keys are interchangable. Get a couple of your trustworthy buddies to come by and try their key on your car. then make a copy.

That is why it is uber important to have an alarm on a e30.

BMW does NOT have 7 extra keys sitting around for your car. What they do have is the key code for the 'cuts' on the keyblade and the initial code for each of the 10 chips stored in a database. The way the transponder system works in a BMW is that there is a fixed portion of the code and a rolling portion. The EWS unit data is stored when every box is created and synched to a car and they can make new keys up until the 10 are exhausted (ever wonder why the key is pre-programmed?)

As soon as you use the key once, the rolling portion of the transponder id code changes so BMW no longer can make a key to that 'slot' (there are slots 1-10 in the ews unit). Once all 10 are made, you are SOL and have to change the unit (or get someone to read it - I can do it and it is a PAIN! - it is possible to make keys over positions of lost keys by reading both the fixed and rolling portions of the code at that instant, code a new chip and use it, making the original key for that slot useless).

I know that isn't the topic of this thread, I've just read tons of misinformation regarding where the keys are made/stored etc. They are made in Oshawa (I believe, the BMW parts depot) in Canada and NJ in the states, not Germany. Even parts guys will give you different info, most don't even know (I used to work at a dealer).

I'd be happy to try to help someone if they are stuck with only one key left for their car and don't want to shell out the coin for a new ews unit and new keys.

Your ews has 10 key slots that can be registered to it. Once you reach that number you have to change the ews module which in turn frees up 10 new spaces for your car.

And i don't read dates on forums when I'm looking for pertinent information to what I'm researching. Just so happened that I saw his comment and he made it seem like your car is no good anymore once you've wasted all 10 keys.
