I think it is pretty reasonable, I would even consider myself lucky that I am still able to get a key cut to spec for a ~20+ yr old car.
Not sure if all manufactures could do the same for older cars.

someone on here has key blanks I think, and or you can get the blanks from e-bay if you want an oem bmw key. otherwise you'll be dropping the coin through them.

blanks are useless unless you have something to copy.

my friend once bought a car without a key and had the key made from a molding. i'm just not sure how much he paid for it or where he had it done. i'll try to find out, but by that time...the 5 days wait from the dealer might have been worth it.

If you can get into the car still call a locksmith, have him use the glovebox lock to make you a key.

@ least on e30s you can have a key cut. With e46s BMW makes 10 kets for each car during assembly (3 are shipped to dealer with car) and 7 remain in Germany @ the factory. You cannot make duplicates. The ONLY source is BMW...... If you had a key breaking or losing habit you could eventually run out of keys for your car...... LOL ;-(

Hopefully no-one out there is that bad that they can go through that many keys.
