Exclamation HELP! What engine is this? (pics!)

I'm new to BMW's (trying to buy my 1st atm) and I just looked at a really nice condition 318is, but I'm not sure what engine this is! All my research say it should have a distributor-less M42, but this here looks like a M40. Can I get anyone to confirm? Also, engine ticks slightly, i hear that's an M40 thing too.

BTW, car has 92,000 Mi (US car, reg in ontario), no rust, mint interior, safetied and e-test for $3K. From a dealer, so not much history. Any thoughts? I hear it's close to the expensive time to own the car, according to the Buying guide sticky.

Looking at the picture, looks like a DOT-R sticker on the drivers side fender, so it was replaced.

the dealer bought it at auction, as it is, but he did say it was in an accident, he didn't know where. i did see LFF did not have the VIN on it, but didn't know it was supposed to. Man i love this forum!

no, cause there is no way it has 92,000miles, back in 2001 it has 132,000miles.

ya, i totally owe you on this one, I'm supposed to go drive it tomoorow aft, I think i still will, if only because it's the 1st 318 5 speed i've found, so i'd like to see the difference between that and the 325.

Ami wasting his time? yes, but considering the circumstances....i don't really feel bad.
