Save your money and get a D90... I had a D60, now D80 and plan on a D90 or D300 next... Once NAS strike's you...

The D90 sensor is WORLDS ahead and lowlight photography is fantastic on it. ISO3200 without sweating. Anything more than ISO800 in low light on the D60 and you'll be in grainy town.

yea, it's about $600 more...

Rebel XS and the D90 are in a totally different class of camera. Can't compare the two.

I personally did not like Canon because of the body shape. My hands cramped holding it for longer periods (bigger hands). Try it out for a bit while you are in store and you'll see what I mean (unless you have smaller hands). The grip parts is smaller and more narrow. Makes my fingers wrap around unnaturally.

3-4bills no way. If you are really lucky , you may find D40 for 400 on CL/kiji.

I'm already meeting someone on Wednesday to pick up a d60 for 4 bills with VR lens, and it honestly wasn't that hard its $499 brand new.

And to Deep who suggested the d80, I'm just looking for a starter DSLR to get my feet wet.

I'm running a D80 right now - ITCHING to upgrade to a D300 - just waiting it out a bit more for the market to drop on them.

I still use an old D100. For web images, it gets the job done. Don't fall for the upgrade trap unless you really have to! Any of the current lower-end Nikon DSLRs will be good enough for most, especially beginners or those new to SLR photography.

^^^ The newer sensors are night and day when it comes to low light situations... There's the old addage that "it's the photographer, not the gear". I believe that's true, to a limit. Better equipment does help.
