Pretty sure a timing chain job on an M42 could be done at a shop for under 1k including all parts and labour. Plus, since it's not an M motor, no worries about DIYing it so really you could do it for close to the same cost as the timing belt job on an M20. Only way less frequently.
I agree 100%. My comment was certainly apples to pomegranates, but since I'm in the throes of getting the chain done, it was on my mind.
I know guys who have diy'ed an M42 chain, and I think it's something I'd undertake if I had the time. I just have no idea of the cost.
Anyway, I think a 318is begs to have a 3.8L S38 swap
