About to buy an E46

I checked out an E46 today, but after the test drive noticed that the RPM fluctuates a tiny bit... It's not bad now, but will this snowball into something expensive to fix, what is causing this?
also the red oil light came on when starting the car and the the same oil light stayed on the whole test drive but it was orange...
Can anyone help ?

Based on what you had described, the car is not maintained, my adivice (help to you) is to walk away from this one and find another E46 to test drive.

i'd walk away from this vehicle...

for future reference:

1. you should check all fluid levels
- engine oil
- power steering fluid
- brake fluid
- coolant level

2. check if the tires are ok
- bulging
- uneven wear
- all four same brand

3. check for unusual idle
- at start-up
- before warm
- at operating temperature
- watch out for any warning light on dash

4. check if A/C blows cold air
- should blow out cold air immediately
- blower shouldn't hesitate

5. check if the steering wheel shimmy
- around 60-80kph.
- 120kph if safe to do so

7. check all electronics
- radio/CD/lights/wiper/wiper spray/signals/highbeam/interior lights/power windows/power locks/sunroof/trunk release

8. check brake feel
- no vibration when slowing down
- no squeels

9. check acceleration
- no slipping of clutch
- no bogging

10. check suspension
- press on every corner of car, should bounce only once
- when driving steering/handling should be crisp (that is what BMW is known for)

If anything is out of the ordinary, walk away or make it a negotiating factor...

Vladvm is bang on the money. I've recently seen too many maxmembers buying crap. Oh but it was a good deal. They say, and I respond, was it REALLY? And they shrug. It's cheaper to buy a mint car that's more expensive, than one that, oh you could get this fixed or that fixed and save $2 g's. Buy the better one. It is cheaper, believe me.

From what your explaining, the RPM's fluctuating could be one of the follow or ALL bad spark plugs, ignition coils, idler valve control, intake boot, etc...

Now the oil light coming on, could be low on oil, or defective oil level sensor.

vladvm has a goodpoint, you should check ALL those items first before purchasing a car. I've been scrutinized to check a car TOO CLOSELY and I am picky. But I am picky because I don't want to buy a car and then realize it needs 2 or 8K worth of repairs down the road....

Why buy something if its going to cost you a lot of money in the end? and BMW's aren't cheap to fix either....

that's just my two cents...
