At some places if they were smart, they could have gotten paid more for those pennies than their currency value due to the copper content.

A) Cash was a back-up in case they don't take the pennies, or,
B) He used the cash to go and buy pennies (bank)

I think it's B. He probably had his wallet in the car, so they loaned him the cash to buy the pennies. He paid back what he had.

Ah but you can't, it is, after all, a legal tender.

Funny shit - today I was at costco at lunch with a couple of guys from work. A guy in front tried to pay with 30 toonies and the cashiers asked another cashier if she could take that or it has to be rolled - I laughed, so did my colleagues. Proceeded to tell her, it's legal tender my dear, be happy it's not pennies, she pinched her face and took them...
LOL

Maybe in the land of the stupid... but I'm pretty sure a retailer here in Canaduh doesn't have to accept a box full of pennies.
Just like retailers choose not to accept $100 bills.

In Canada, the Currency Act sets out what is considered legal tender:
Limitation
(2) A payment in coins referred to in subsection (1) is a legal tender for no more than the following amounts for the following denominations of coins:
(a) forty dollars if the denomination is two dollars or greater but does not exceed ten dollars;
(b) twenty-five dollars if the denomination is one dollar;
(c) ten dollars if the denomination is ten cents or greater but less than one dollar;
(d) five dollars if the denomination is five cents; and
(e) twenty-five cents if the denomination is one cent.
Not sure what the law says south of the border.

^ correct. but as mentioned before to eliminate debt they can accept ANY legal tender.. as far as I understand you can pay tow truck companies in pennies and they must accept it.
