To Remove the cat or not (Audi related)
Hey guys
Ok, so when I bought my audi back in november it passed emissions with flying colours. But the cars always felt to me like its being super restricted. I know I'm used to driving the bimmer sporting a 8.5lbs flywheel, and 3.2l to boot, but I still feel as if the audi has power waiting to be unleashed. I have a wierd feeling that my cat may be plugged as I had a minor leak last winter with the audi right at the downpipe and it seemed to give the car a little bit more pep to it.
But I've also heard vw's/audi's need back pressure. So im debating whether or not I should pull the cat or not. My next e-test is due august 2010 so not worried about that now, and also I had a mechanic with a passat wagon vr6 awd tell me my car would pass without the cat since theyre doing a sitting test. Apparently his vr6 passed with no cats. My motor runs well! at 317k, I can go a full oil change interval (5-6k synthetic) with only half a liter of oil lost.
Any ideas or input is greatly appreciated!!!
Thanks
Jay

cats are not restrictive if they are in proper working order.

I would leave it on, don't think you will gain much by it.
No luck selling it?

^^^I havent really been trying, after i changed the distributor the cars been running/starting like a charm. Then I start watching old quattro video's on youtube and I imagine mountains of snow, lol. I've actually gotten quite a few e-mails/calls about the car asking if its still available.
But then I start asking myself, for 2gs what else can I really buy which brings awd, heated leather/mirrors, power everything... So I just keep it. That and also I think about driving it in the snow and man, with memories driving up dufferin while everyone just sits there struggling to move, its hard to let go.
Thanks for the input guys
Jay

I took my cat off for a while and felt noticable gains, nothing crazy but definetly slight gains. If your only street driving I would leave it, its not worth the hassle.
Also, if you get pulled over and they find you purposely removed the cat and installed a test pipe = $10,000 max fine.

I would have to agree. If he wants more power he should replace his entire system.

What audi is it?
If its turbo take it off you will see good gains.
If not i doubt you ll notice the gain.
Keep in mind that on some Audis the cats are known to colapse when increased boost is used.

When I put a cat back on my car, it gained torque. Go figure.
Leave it on man.

Get pulled over and get a huge fine, that's how. After you pay the fine you would have to install another cat. Sometimes I wonder how some people think.

just leave it on or replace it with a freeflow style cat.
Performance cats nowadays are almost like resonators anyways so it doesn't restrict the system compared to a factory cat.
