Required for safety inspection?

Reverse lights are non-functioning on my car at the moment and I need to have a safety done tomorrow as my vacation is days away. Anyone experience whether or not they are required for it? I've read contradicting things.

i dont know bout B.C, but in ontario and quebec you definitely need them to work, check online maybe your MTO site or ask a shop that does safety checks

it is required...part of safety. think about this...if you brake lights didn't work how would someone be warned you are braking...so if you are reversing and someone is approaching...how can someone gauge the distance and more importantly the warning that you are reversing?

I'm not sure, there are two possible reasons. I know one experienced water in the housing at one point while the other one is dry...however that shouldn't affect the other side. Another possibility is that it has a different tranny that came on the vehicle so maybe the switch is faulty/inactive.

i'd check the reverse light switch , it's on the left side of the transmission and obviously fuses, relays, bulbs etc, maybe the taillights circuit board is rusty ?

Is there no way I can get the vehicle registered with non-functional back-up lights? I need the vehicle for monday badly.

if i were u id get it checked man , just go online to bimmerforums.com or just search for it on here, im sure you can find something that;ll help, last thing you need is some cop pulling you over and giving you some bull ticket,... but im sure some shop there in BC will let it go and write you a safety anyway, just check it out

I'm in ontario now, barrie. And I probably won't get pulled over, it's the backup lights that are non-functional...EVERYTHING else works 100%. The shop looks kinda shady so maybe they'll let me get away with it if I cover some shop hours to get it dealt with. I NEED this vehicle on the road.

did u get a chance to check all your fuses, bulbs, circuit boards, relays etc? if so then your problem may be the reverse switch thats located on the tranny. very simple to remove right at home, heres some info , although no pics, that'll help you i hope

I checked the fuses yes, some of the connections weren't the cleanest. I'm going to see how the inspection goes tomorrow.

It's most likely the reverse switch in the tranny. If the car's had an engine swap, it's possible it was forgotten to put the connections from the new wiring harness to the tranny as well...as bimmersport forgot on my m50 swap a while ago. Just don't mention anything to them about it at the safety lol I doubt they'll put it in reverse to see.

^ And I just was All fuses and relays checked out, it's probably the switch and on my subie it's in a really awkward spot. Gotta take it to the stealer to get dealt with on monday IF they can do it in time. Otherwise I gotta rig up some shady system that when it goes in 6th/reverse the lights come on
