Who Insures Cars 20+ Years Old?

Hi Everyone,

My other cars are insured through Bel Air Direct, but they won't insure a car over 19 years old (1989 325is). RBC will, and so will Powell Insurance Brokers which is affiliated with Bel Air. Both of them want $1200/year for basic coverage. I pay that for both of my other cars, and one is insured for business use!

Any advice/contacts/recommendations would be appreciated.

I did see a thread on this a while ago, but I couldn't find it when I searched this morning...

Thanks,

Brent

I'm with TD insurance and I'm paying around a grand for basic liability. The only other thing I could suggest is "historic vehicle."

My insurance when i was 18 was 9600$ a year. so my mom got a nice christmas present.

I'd say 1200 is high for someone over 25 without a history. God I miss paying 380$ a year in northern Quebec.

Propr'one-I do think that's high, I am 36, drive about 50, 000 km a year, 1 ticket in 10 years, no accidents for 15 years...the car is a bmw but has been appraised at $500-if it gets stolen or destroyed in an accident within the first 5 months I'm ahead, after that, they're making 100 bones a month off me...lol

the biggest part of insurance coverage is liability, not damage to your own vehicle.

(and the biggest part of liability is killing/hurting someone, not damaging a car)

^ truth. insurance coverage and rates are almost PURELY about liability risk. Which is why a young / ticketed driver with bad / no record driving a fast car will always pay high rates. Has nothing to do with the car at that point.

Of course, some cars are safer than others, and statistically some get in more accidents. They have a myriad of stats on this, which is how they calc rates.

Want to talk about liability costs? When I was in Quebec you get charged the liability through the government as part of your registration costs... to register your car, and pay the liability (1,000,000) it was about 180$ a year. Plus my hefty 380$ a year to the insurance company.

LOL T.O. is just a huge rip-off place to live, I like to visit there, for a day or so; but I'd never live there.

By the way I pay 84$ a month here in St. Kitts... and I think I'm still getting ripped off.
