Shanghai building collapses 6/27/09 *pics*

Go china!

An under-construction apartment building in Shanghai collapsed, almost knocked the other building in the complex down

wtf!
thats a seriously odd collapse.
The foundation/soil is what seems to give way! Im surprised the footings didnt hold the building in place, well atleast the lower portion of it.

Actually building in Shangai is quite difficult due to the nature of the soil/ground..
Considering the rate of growth and the amount of projects taking place one building is acceptable. Landslides and miscalculations in the physiology of the ground you are building happens all over the world.
The weird thing is that the building fell on its side and still is more or less intact. I would say that this is amazing and in my eyes show a good cement and static analysis involved in the constraction of the building!

Well i am not sure if this was caused by the foundation or from the land beneath it. If its the first one you are right. But if its the second one i still stand by my opinion.

From the looks of it seems like the slope failed on the collapse side.. due to rain.. shear failure ftl!!

the land beneath is part of the foundation, and should be engineered to support footing loads. you can't blame it on the land.. it's like blaming your herpes on the hooker.

Really intriguing that it fell as one piece. It's still a construction fail though.
