My '95 318 has developed something new...starting at about 60 kmh I can hear a slight humming..and feel a slight vibration in the body of the car..not a shaking just a low level vibration. What do ya think wheel bearings?.
Just one more problem to add to the long list!!!
Wheel bearings- could be. Steer hard from side to side and see if the sound becomes louder as you do this. Or when exiting a ramp depending on which side the bearing is gone the sound will come from there. Ball joints? possible too.

If it was the bearings... you will HEAR it.. its like rollerblading on epic pavement sound
If its a humming and slight vibration.. most likely the ball joints.
OK thanks for the input. I do know the right lower control arm is shot..I can hear that noise on bumps at low speed. Gawd I hope its not bearings...from what I've heard that is big bucks! And I already have enough to spend on this car.

Is it like a *clunk clunk* sound when you go over bumps??
Well...it's a *clunking* sound...from the right front...but I don't **think* it's connected to the other problem (the humming sound). I've already been told by a mechanic the right control arm in front is shot. The humming sound starts at about 60 KMH even on smooth roads..the vibration I feel is like touching a running electric motor.

That's what I was afraid of. Judging by the variation in noise on right hand tuns, it seems to be the left side. The hum is not very loud...but it's there.

Yea.. the opposite side from the way you turn will be the side the bearing is faulty.. because when you turn the other way it takes some of the load off of it making the HUMM quieter.. You'll be able to drive for a bit with it but should replace it.. pick up a used spindle and just swap that as it may be cheaper and easier for you with hand tools! The control arm bushings are pretty easy to replace too and very affordable.. you might as well get ///M ones as they are slightly offset for "better performance"
Thanks for that info - sounds like the spindle swap would be easier. Re the control arm..two garages have suggested they replace the whole arm? Why , if the bushings are cheap and easily replaced ?

That ridiculous.. if your UPPER balljoints were gone then they may suggest that as they are not replaceable and part of the CA. The lower balljoints are replaceable and can be pressed in.. The control arm bushings themselves are a breeze tho! 2 bolts and you can pull them off the CA and use a vice to press new ones in.. then you use dish soap to squeeze the arm through the rubber bushing and bolt it back on.. should take you no time to do them!
