Question Would you find detailed traffic reports useful?

Imagine going to a website, that is also accessible on a mobile device, and seeing a map of Toronto. The streets are all color coded based on traffic flow that is updated every 5-10 minutes.

Would you use this? Would you pay for it?

You mean something like this http://www.theweathernetwork.com/traffic_flow/toronto but for every single street?

I used to use the cameras, http://www.citynews.ca/traffic.aspx

I wouldn't pay for it, usually it's available for free

Yes, just like that, for every street. (Well that would slowly build up over time).

The paying for it is not too big of an issue b/c if it gets popular enough, it pays for itself.

To try to build up something like this from scratch would be very expensive, how do you figure you would gather all this traffic information?

Are you trying to build something like this? It's a great idea but some GPS units do have a similar feature.

i have this on my iphone. Its called TOtraffic. There's different apps for many areas.

This program also loads traffic cameras so you can get (almost) realtime pictures.

I dont sit in traffic.

^^ So using the cameras CP24 has available, right? That doesn't exactly tell you the traffic at Jane and Bloor does it? Or Yonge at Steels.

I'm interested in what the GPS units base their data on. Also the city-available cameras? Prob not... Do they cross reference with other GPS users and see their relative motion or what??

Its probably not practical to do this on urban roads, simply because traffic conditions can change really quickly in the city. There is accident reporting though (trapster has incident reporting)

Total Traffic Network, http://totaltraffic.com/

Why are you not doing this research yourself, if you've got an idea, start researching, don't expect max members to do it all for you.

I'm not expecting anything. I didn't say, Hey Mirek, you bitch, tell me what GPS does to get the data! I said "I'm interested".

Thanks for being a useful cock though
