what cars came with an N52?



In Canada, which models?

did we ever get the higher output b30?

I'm pretty sure those came in the first year of the E9x models (323/325/330).
They only had them for 1 year i believer (2006).
N52b25 = 323/325
N52b30 = 330

This is off the top of my head btw; I could be wrong on some details.

edit: apparently they were really solid motors!!
I'm not sure if anyone can confirm, but i thought I heard in top gear once that the 1M uses the base E9x 330 motor with turbos?

The 328 has the n52b30 as well, and so does the e90 325 (yeah, it's weird, but they're all 3L). Also the 128

Yup my '06 325 has the 3L N52 and the only difference between that motor and the one in the 330 is a 1 stage intake manifold vs a 3 stager and the ecu.

It is one of the lightest motors in that displacement range ever.. i think its 161kg (350lb) and is very strong.. although it does have an issue with the aluminum bolts they had to use to work with the magnesium in the engine which inevitably snap and leak oil.

ya its a pretty sweet engine. im surprised they only offered it for such a short period.

Just about every non-turbocharged 6-cylinder BMW in the mid-late 00's. The 255+hp version (330, X3, X5, Z4) is the rarest and also one of my personal favourite BMW motors when bolted to a non-SUV chassis.

Was valvetronic used in both engines? I think it was only used in the 2006 e90 330i engine (US & Canada), that's what made the 330 engine that much better.

In euro it was used in a couple other models and offered in more years.

Aside from M engines, that was my favourite and I wish the made it longer and put it in more models.

The n52b30 is a 3.0L with double vanos and valvetronic. They made an n53 for europe which is a 3.0L with double vanos and DI but no valvetronic which is good for 272 hp.

if you are thinking about swapping it in an E36, don't even bother, the U.S. N52 power output is very similar to the S52.



It will make a killer track car tho due to the weight of the motor.

The N52 is a hard motor to work with, we have ALOT of experience with this motor, building 4 motors for the 2011 CTCC season.

They are light, but have many design flaws, no dowel pins on crank shaft, weak connecting rods, harmonic balancers like to fly off after 7000 RPM.

It is a completly different I6 then any BMW motor before.

Aftermarket internal parts are almost non existant.

They are reliable to about 235-245WHP and less then 7000 RPM.

Our last motors we built for CTCC made a bit over 275 WHP with a 8400 RPM rev limit, but the 325 transmission's couldn't hold it with the slicks.

New trannys and better bottom ends for 2012 season

Great last two posts!!
I wasnt thinking about it for a swap for me...just something I was pondering about the other day. It could make a great swap for an e30. Just something slightly different/unique.

Its a great engine but obviously they were pushing the limits with the new block design and didnt worry so much about some of the small details/had to keep costs down somewhere.


I figured parts would be scarce considering they didnt offer it very long.

Rocco.. what would be the best performance mod you can do to that engine in your experience (215hp N52) under say $500 that would yield the highest gains?

Ecu tune, and headers make decent gains on stock motor.
