So I picked up an E39 M5 Motor and tranny...

After having crazy thoughts about installing an S62 E39 M5 motor in my 330ci ZHP, a client of mine offered one as payment for the remainder of a car he purchased from me. I checked everything out, and it was all legit, so I accepted.

Its from a 2003 M5 with 35,000KM. Complete Motor and 6spd Tranny.

My question is, what is this setup worth if I decide to sell it?

Thanks

It's worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it.

I'd guess somewhere around $10k for the setup assuming that it comes with the wiring harnesses and DME

so it wouldn't be unrealistic to ask $10k...

Who has good experience installing these M5 motors in E46's?

I wonder what's involved and what needs to be changed/upgraded? And the cost for this install job?

That would be a pretty sweet project. Any idea on the weight difference between the engines? You wouldn't want to ruin the balance of an E46. I would think that its nimbleness is a huge part of its appeal.

I've seen people asking $6500 USD ($7300 CAD) for an engine and tranny with no DME or harness, all the way up to $12,000 USD ($13,500 CAD) for a complete package.

$13.5k is a bit high IMO, but I'd definitely start at around $10k if I was selling this package. To put things into perspective, the wiring harness and DME are worth $2500 alone.

I would put that motor in a E46 Touring, that would make a sick sleeper, I've seen a pic of one somewhere, don't know if that car is in the US or Europe.

Yeah without the stock DME you pretty much need to go with a stand alone unit that will need to be professionally tuned (especially if you want to have traction/stability control, and abs), at which point the cost of the project will probably be approaching the cost of a nice used M5 lol.

Go on ebay and buy the whole M5 for <16k now. I'd say the motors worth 6k.

Wouldn't be worth it. Sell your 540 and use that $$ plus some extra $$ to buy an M5, it would end up costing you less than the swap.
This kind of swap is reserved for the hardcore enthusiast with deep pockets.
