If you are a rock music guy, go JBL
If you like sound clarity, go Infinity

I think he's just saying retailers like best buy / futureshop overcharge...
Either way, the front speakers are something I would not skimp out on.. I am looking for a good set aswell. The rears are mostly for soundfill and actually throw off the accuracy in a high end SQ focused system.
MB Quart, JL Zr (if you can afford them)... if not try Premier / Pioneer
for decent midrange quality & price.
Stay away from sony & pioneer entry levels... waste of money IMO

^^ I agree if your going to go with pioneer make sure you go wit their premier line. Most big companies have their their crappy sell out lines and then their good lines that are only carried at private retailers. Pioneer has premier, kenwood has exelon, and so on. JL is one company that only sells the best and even an entry level JL speaker will sound really good. The JL ZR is going a bit extreme I am confident if you went with a VR you would be very happy. Also keep in mind buying an amp for the speakers is well worth the money. Buying aftermarket speakers with no amp is almost a waste of time. At most your deck will begiving them 50 watts when most afternarket speakers are going to be needing at least 75.

^ I assumed he was amplifying the components... running them off a stock deck would be pointless. Even an aftermarket deck will give you at best 12-14 watts clean rms... underpowering most of the speakers we mentioned which are built for 80+ watts rms and resulting in you blowing them. I can recomend a good site to get the stuff online, Ive been using them for 2 system builds now and they sell stuff way under msrp.
PM me, I don't want to put on a web link as it might interfere with sponsors?

I'm giving props to the MB Quarts... I've got 6x9s and 5.25s in my car and I love them!

Speaking from experience, I would think the distorion you mention is due to the lower frequencies, the bass even on the HK system sucks big time.
What I did is added an aftermarket amp with sub box, and disconnected / removed the hk subs from the trunk. So the lows are played by the sub and the factory amp takes care of filtering the frequencies for the rest of the speakers.
I play my music loud and I can say that allthough not as clear as my amplified premier components in my old car, the HK speakers do a good job.

Any chance you'd be able to PM me the site? I'm looking for most likely an overhaul on my stock components.
Thanks in advance
