If the latch doesn't work, break it off, carefully, or try to go up behind it and you'll see a hook hanging down. Push it off to the side while pushing up on the box. The main problem is the two little tabs that hold the box in place. It's hard to discribe.
Best bet is to find a new/used glove box latch and see how it works, or check out someone elses car. If you're gunna bust the handle off, make sure you remove the keyed cylinder, and swap it over to the new latch when you re-install.
